With an album title referring to to one of the chief ideas of the notable psychoanalist Carl Gustav Jung, the trio from Iowa present a wild, riff-laden journey through the desolate wastelands of the subconscious. Combining the sonic prowess of Mastodon with the psychedelic heaviness of OM, DRUIDS serve their grooves with a distinctly forward-thinking attitude, taking their witchy brand of psychedelic sludge metal to a new level of sophistication.

“We wanted to make a record that reflected the uncertainty of everything in 2020, and we figured this would be the time to really try something different,” explains drummer Keith Rich. By moving their operations from their hometown of Des Moines, IA to Salt Lake City, UT, the band were able to escape the distractions of everyday life and shift their gaze from the endless cornrows of their homeland to the breathtaking peaks of the Rocky Mountains. The result is a record that sees the band increase the dynamics of their compositions while incorporating an even wider spectrum of sounds. “We wanted to make a pivot with this new record, slow things down and experiment with different sounds,” continues Rich, pointing to further influences ranging from Radiohead to Neurosis. Indeed the choppy bass lines of album closer ‘Cloak-Noir Bloom’ do hearken back to quintessential experimental rock opus ‘Airbag’, while only moments later the same track breathes the explosive atmosphere of the seminal post-metal act from Oakland, California.

Truthfully, these three musicians sound nothing like a three-piece, but rather like an army, the way they march through their songs. The big, fat murky bass sound of Drew Rauch forms a solid counterbalance to the majestic guitar wizardry of his brother Luke, who channels the spirits of classic guitar heroes like Zakk Wylde and Billy Gibbons. Meanwhile drummer Keith Rich channels the voodoo magic of the nightly tribal drums ringing out across the plains of Central Africa, propelling the potent riffs of the Rauch brothers onward into the heart of darkness, where they continue to morph and restlessly shape-shift.

All across these eight phantasmagorical tracks, DRUIDS portray their unique way of exploring riffs and grooves in multiple ways – both texturally and contextually – exhausting each possibility before moving to the next part and rarely to return to the first. However, instead of rejecting the traditional verse-chorus scheme altogether, the trio has found a new way of playing with certain formulas of song structure at times, while intentionally straying away from them at other times.

Adding to this sonically diverse experience are the many different vocal styles put on display by both Drew and Luke throughout the album. From the solemn chanting on ‘Traveler’ to the earnest and introspective clean vocals on ‘Hide’, from the spoken word part of ‘Ide’s Koan’ to the gut-tearing rasp that fires the listener on in the ‘Dance of Skulls’. Sitting comfortably in the mix at an equal level with the other instruments, the words are often shrouded by the heavy bass sound, carefully concealing their true meaning to the casual listener. Only occasionally will the words reveal themselves – seemingly at just the right time – to those who choose to engage themselves in the deeper layers of the album.

As a seminal psychoanalist, C.G. Jung recognised the need for humans to engage the Shadow, which represents the unknown and suppressed aspects of the personality, including those often considered to be negative. “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate,” is a quote which is often misattributed to him on the web, but it does lead back to statements he made in the latter half of his career, explaining that those who manage to escape the river of subconsciousness are the ones who will see the star of their destiny more clearly. Emerging from the murky waters of the pandemic years, DRUIDS have created a sweeping opus that offers an experience that exists on the interface of expression and introspection. An enlightening mix of psychedelic rock, atmospheric sludge and classic heavy metal that is both deeply rooting and refreshingly uplifting.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0690/8939/4966/products/94bfa2c9d5b52909e9a7821a77264645.jpg?v=1670568158
enphin-end-cut-2x12
enPHin "End Cut" 2x12"

*Actual vinyl color may differ from store image

“The real mystery does not behave myste- riously or secretively; it speaks a secret lan- guage, it adumbrates itself by a variety of images which all indicate its true nature.” — Carl Jung in Psychology and Alchemy, part III, chapter 2.1

Enigmatic psych doom outfit ENPHIN, formerly known as “Mr. Peter Hayden” or simply “PH” return with their 6th full-length album and Pelagic Records debut, titled “End Cut”. It is about who one could be.” Ever since their inception in 2000, ENPHIN have, among many things, explored the Jungian-Alchemical spiritual progression arc which ties in with concepts like the dark night of the soul and the four stages of awakening. Starting out as a quartet, the band wrote their first three albums, Faster than Speed (2010), Born A Trip (2012) and Archdimension Now (2014) in an attempt to deconstruct the four dimensions using winding compositions to stretch time and space, blending psychedelic rock, space rock and doom metal while expanding their lineup up to seven members at best. After that the band re- leased Eternal Hayden (2016) and Osiris Hayden (2019), which were characterized by more concise songwriting and a focus on themes like spiritual growth, ascension, and overall progression towards freedom.

Presenting the listener with a post-apocalyptic storyline, End Cut can be perceived as the final part of a second trilogy, as well as a first part of something new, which explores the aforementioned themes on multiple levels. With a lineup reduced to its original size of four musicians, End Cut continues the ban- d’s trajectory of writing increasingly shorter songs. Gone are the hour-long sonic journeys that marked the first trilogy and enter fifteen dynamic compositions that make up a troubling journey through dark landscapes and harrowing visions.

Driven by a moody bass drum thumping away at mid-tempo, album opener “An Nihilist” acts as a manifesto, beckoning the listener to join the band in their continued philosophical explorations. Complemented by the ambient vocals of Finnish electro-pop singer Ringa Manner (Ruusut, The Hearing) and a great number of samples, End Cut sees ENPHIN expand their sonic palette once more to an unprecedented variety, marking a shift in musical direction not unlike bands like Ulver or Boris pulled off in the past. However, instead of wholeheartedly going in a different direction, ENPHIN use End Cut to expand their sound in a great multitude of directions, further exploring elements of industrial, synthwave, goth rock and techno.

In expanding their vision and contracting their sound, ENPHIN have lifted their artistry to a whole new dimension, making the name change all the more fitting and appropriate. As with their previous albums, the interpretation of the listener is central to the experience of the music of ENPHIN. Like an esoteric eucharist, End Cut requires partaking to reveal its mystery. Listening to End Cut without the knowledge that it pertains to Jungian-Alchemy, is like an “obscurum per obscuribus” — explanation of the unfamiliar through something even more unfamiliar — a phrase that Jung himself describes in his analogy of alchemy, Christian dogma, and psychological symbolism.

The undiscerning listener will find the album to be a wild and compelling sonic trip— but for those who are familiar with the band’s previous records, End Cut will cut even deeper and reveal itself as a journey beyond the physical, beyond the meta, beyond death, towards an unknown gloomy place painted in the dark colours of the album’s closing tracks Nothing, Sang Unity, and Endling. After three years of pandemic-induced inertia, the four gentlemen from Paris return with their new record Rupture which sees them turn the page to a new chapter in their considerable career. Being recorded in a live-setting, Rupture concerns the band’s feelings about the drastic environmental changes that can be perceived all over the world. Casting their eco-angst into nine soaring and explorative tracks, LOST IN KIEV channel a sound that’s raw and pristine, reaching an emotive power beyond anything they have done before.

Since the Paris Agreement of 2015, climate change has been a frm topic on the international political agenda, and one closely followed by the media. However, with the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the recent spikes in fuel and food prices, media attention to rising temperatures and vanishing ecosystems has waned a fair bit, so it comes at the right time that the French quartet reminds us of these pressing global issues. “Rupture is an album made to express how we feel about the breaking point between modern civilisation and natural life,” explains guitarist/synth player Maxime Ingrand. “Planetary stability hangs by a thread because of too much consumption and other human activities, while many things (pollution, animal life, energy consumption) are at a tipping point. These are things that afect us and that we try to transcribe musically, both negatively and positively.”

These negative and positive poles are also found in the philosophy of Glenn Albrecht, the man who coined the title of the album’s frst single «Solastalgia», which could be defned as “emotional or existential distress caused by environmental change.” Albrecht argues that we can experience negative psychological efects from destructive changes to our domestic natural environment, but also that we can heal this damage by performing actions that heal this domestic ecosystem. This nature-versus- culture discourse also takes place on Rupture, where LOST IN KIEV create moments of sublime beauty and rapture, that get distorted masterfully to create a sense of alienation and disillusion.

These moments were captured in a powerful live recording session with Amaury Sauvé at The Apiary Studio in Laval. The live-setting gives Rupture a directness which instantly beams your imagination to the main stage of the aforementioned post-rock festivals. Where previous albums like Nuit Noire (2016) and Persona (2019) featured a thoroughly produced tonal pallette characterised by spoken- word samples and the retro-futuristic use of synthesisers, Rupture has a rougher and more immediate sound. The recognisable infuence of VANGELIS and JEAN-MICHEL JARRE is still written all over this record, but in this live setting the synth lines of «Squaring the Circle» and «But You Don’t Care» come way up close, almost as if you’re there in the room with the band.

What sets LOST IN KIEV apart from their peers is not only the perfection of their produced sound but also their composition and musicianship—on Rupture their experience oozes through the cracks. The confusion and dread are tangible in the lead guitar playing, the artful use of noise and distortion keeps you listening closely. While this album was still recorded with previous drummer Yoann Vermeulen, his successor Jérémie Legrand proved during the band's recent tour with MASERATI that he fts in seamlessly with his efortless and elegant playing. Each song is marked by a delicate balance between repetition and the introduction of new ideas, while every part feels appropriate and none of the musical ideas ever overstays their welcome. Even «Prison of Mind», almost a straight up melodic rock banger featuring Loïc Rossetti from THE OCEAN, amazes with its concise composition and creative use of vocal counterpoint during the song’s fnale.

With Rupture, LOST IN KIEV have delivered another tour de force that surpasses their previous outings in many ways. It’s all found in the word viol- ate, which is always a negative word, e.g. a violation of rights, a person getting violated, etc. It’s never positive and certainly in the light of recent events—the #metoo-movement, the Covid-pandemic, the overturning of Roe vs. Wade by the US Supreme Court—an especially powerful image. On the contrary, the word consensus is generally considered a positive notion, but on Violate Consensus Reality it is the central idea against which the band declaim.

This subversiveness is characteristic of the mindset needed to approach the music of PSYCHONAUT. Violate Consensus is not for the faint hearted, concept-wise but also music-wise as it contains some of the most gnarly riffs and technical playing on any PSYCHONAUT record to date. Violate Consensus Reality constitutes a wild ride from the breakneck paced riffing of «A Pacifist’s Guide To Violence», through the undulating neo-classical piano passages of «Hope» to the glorious finale of «Towards the Edge». The mantric title track opens with the angelic voice of Stefanie Mannaerts (Brutus) and slowly builds up to erupt in an explosive sermon delivered by Colin H. van Eeckhout (Amenra, CHVE, Absent in Body), the appearance of both gifted musicians affirming PSYCHONAUT’s stature in the Belgian metal scene and beyond

“No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main,” so famously wrote the reverend John Donne in his Devotions. Resounding through the ages, Donne’s most direct and honest recognition of human interconnectedness still resonates in the bowels of Violate Consensus Reality, creating a powerful discourse on the intersection of the individual and the collective. It is the distant dark source as described on the band’s previous record – a thrilling 70-minute long magnum opus which saw the band conjure up a night on the old shores of the lake, following a man looking for the ghost of a woman he loved. “Sheol is the story of what was before that night,” continues Emmanuel. “The two albums are built, like the myth of Sysyphus, in a cycle. Their 2007 debut album Des Deux l’Une Est l’Autre harnessed a raw, chaotic energy, while the following Acid Mist Tomorrow (2012) saw them apply a hazy filter to their ferocious sound. On Shores of the Abstract Line (2015) HYPNO5E already transformed into the true modern metal grandmasters they are today, while the special soundtrack album Alba - Les Ombres Errantes explored a more subdued acoustic side of the band.

In many ways, Sheol refers to the band’s previous album, but this record sees them take their musical endeavours one step further in terms of consistency and musical density. Once more, the music is haunted by hair-raising string sections (this time provided by a veritable string trio!) and bloodcurdling percussive rim-clicks. Once more, the band revels in a superbly curated selection of poets reading excerpts of their own work — most notably César Vallejo, Jean Cocteau and Anne Sexton. «Tauca Pt. 1 – Another» shakes your hand like an old friend while album opener «Nowhere» hearkens back to «A Distant Dark Source Pt. 1» with its eerie high guitar leads.

Sheol sees the band sounding warmer and brighter than anywhere else in their storied discography, and the arrival of new drummer Pierre Rettien and bass player Charles Villanueva adds a fresh touch the classic HYPNO5E sound. The sweeping finales of «Lands of Haze» and «The Dreamer and His Dream» as well as the pastoral qualities of the quiet finger-picked parts on «Bone Dust» and «Lava From The Sky» hearken back to the old prog rock records of the seventies, albeit with an updated sonic palette and modern production parameters. Besides, these eight tracks also see the band carefully exploring new patterns, shapes, and forms within their own musical universe: from the alternating use of ritardando and accelerando on the aforementioned rim-clicks to the increased employment of string sections and vocal harmonies.

With the addition of a whole new palette of warmer and brighter tones, HYPNO5E superbly bridge the sounds of the modern progressive metal and retro prog-movements creating an evocative sonic experience. Combining the sonic agility of the American math-core pioneers with the relentless ferocity of the Swedish progressive metal innovators, Herod produce a brand of heavy music that is truly face melting. Having played with le- gendary metal acts like Obituary, Napalm Death and Carcass, Herod are no strangers to the international metal scene, and it shows in the calibre of their music. Their upcom- ing third album The Iconoclast puts the full power of their artistry on display, redefining musical heaviness and atmosphere at every turn imaginable.

“The word iconoclast has had different meanings throughout history,” explains Carroz about the album concept. “In the past it meant the destruction of holy images but today it signifies the aggression towards the rule; a political, social and liberating act.” Pitting the destructive power of the iconoclasts against the oppression of the icons, Herod produce a complex, kafkaesque picture of a future world that leaves little room for hope and optimism.

The Iconoclast sees the Swiss quintet paint with a consistent palette of groovy syncopated riff- ing, heavy breakdowns, and a diversity of vocal techniques and deliveries. Using similar col- ours and textures to create many different pictures, it’s an approach that feels almost experi- mental. Like great abstract painters like Kazimir Malevich or Jackson Pollock, Herod continue to develop their technique and method throughout their oeuvre.

One notable deviation from this palette includes a collaboration with four members of the fam- ous Les Mysterès des Voix Bulgares choir who transform «The Ode to...» into a restless and strangely jubilant centrepiece to the album. The high-pitched polyphonic voices combined with the relentless mechanic pounding of the band make for an experience that approximates the most wildly alienating and unique film scores written for the big screen in recent years: Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack to the epic science fiction film Dune. Commenting on the writing process, the German composer remarked, “I asked myself, why do all these science fiction movies have a European orchestra? We’re supposed to be on a different planet. We are in the future.” Listening to The Iconoclast with this in mind, the music of Herod is transformed to a world bey- ond compare.

Like true students of Zimmer, Herod transport you to a world that is definitely not your own. Al- bum-opener «Icon» greets you with alien high-pitched funerary chants and guitars like un- earthly mouth harps. The Banksy-referencing «The Girl with a Balloon» lets the sounds of a Lovecraftian chasm escape in between its opening notes, while its dual clean vocals admonish you like oracle incantations through the static. Meanwhile the band continues to drench you in grooves ripping up dirt like an overpowered dune buggy. The relentlessly pounding riffs are only sparsely interjected by haunting atmospheric passages, most notably «Intergloom»—an intermezzo with the grandeur of an overture which offers only slight relief amidst Herod’s powerful propensity for sheer violence.

The Iconoclast is a creation of pure magnificence, combining an undeniable artistic mindset with the best of what modern metal has to offer. «The Edifice» features the incredible Matt McGachy from Canadian technical death metal legends Cryptopsy while the album closer sees the band collaborate with long-time friend Loïc Rosetti: «The Prophecy» poses him against a most ferocious backdrop, capturing two amazing vocalists of the past and present Ocean Col- lective teaming up and facing off, since Herod's vocalist Mike Pilat was the main vocalist on The Ocean's «Precambrian» album (2007).

The Iconoclast comprises an unsettling vision of the future—aptly captured by Benedikt Demmer on the album cover—with the slight promise of a new future in mind. “Every destructive act is in itself a creative act of transformation. Recreating something new out of broken elements”, explains Carroz lastly. Initially inspired by watching Kenneth Branagh’s award-winning coming-of-age drama Belfast as the fighting in Ukraine broke out, MIrza found himself reflecting on his own experience as a child and how it has formed the man he is today. As such, the album’s four sections, titled ‘Innocence’, ‘Melancholy’, ‘Rupture’ and ‘Reflection’, serve as the reification of the life and experience that Mirza lost as well as a representation of the identity he has since shaped for himself.

Whereas more recent Arms and Sleepers releases, such as 2022’s full-length ‘former kingdoms’, are peppered with the sultry saxophone refrains, syncopated 16ths and smoky ambience of a New York jazz bar; ‘What Tomorrow Brings’ is instead acute and driving, with complex drum breaks reminiscent of powerful post-rock acts such as BATTLES, Mogwai and Caspian brought insistently and urgently to the fore.

Both taken from the album’s ‘Innocence’ section, instrumental opener ‘Go Now (Don’t Look Back)’ says all that it needs to without saying a word, whilst the following track and half of the record’s leading double single ‘It’s Easy’ tells a deeply personal story. Mirza says that “‘It's Easy’ was written with my father in mind, who was killed in the war in Bosnia in 1993. I was thinking about how ‘easy’ it could have been for there to not be a war and for people, including my dad, to not be killed senselessly.”

Mirza, however, is also trying hard not to let the past affect his optimism for a better future; “In some ways, it could be very ‘easy’ to avoid war, and so this song was written from the perspective of an innocent, somewhat naïve child for whom something like war and violence make absolutely no sense whatsoever.” The propulsive, kick-heavy beats, haunting piano arpeggios and staccato bass lines of ‘It’s Easy’ drive the track along against all odds as the titular, two-word refrain drifts in and out of focus, as much beautiful found-sound sonic texture as it is masterfully silent storytelling.

An audible crossroads of the boy he was, the person he could’ve been and the man he has since become; ‘What Tomorrow Brings’ is proof that, as Arms and Sleepers, Mirza Ramic continues to blur the boundaries between genre, heritage, expectation and influence in order to produce a collection of music that is new, vital and extraordinary.

Returning from time apart to a world forever changed, dread-fuelled duo A SWARM OF THE SUN bring with them their fourth studio album, ‘An Empire’; its brooding, yet beautiful, melancholic narrative arc allows the band to dig ever deeper into desolation whilst a newfound lyrical focus adds a tenderness that is both harrowing and heartwarming at once.

With the early bones of forthcoming ‘An Empire’ tabled by events beyond their control in 2019, Erik and Jakob came together years later and scrapped them in favour of creating something entirely new; something distinctly different to break the cycle, defy categorisation and reflect the uncomfortable uncertainties of the times we now live in. The result is astounding; continuing the thread of narrative composition seen on ‘The Woods’, ‘An Empire’ is a six-track tale told in four distinct movements that are nothing short of devastating, from plaintive piano ballads to raw, full-band fury.

Previously used to setting ‘ground rules’ or establishing a thematic framework for each project, the unexpected slow-burn process and surrounding air of trepidation meant that the A Swarm of the Sun’s rules for ‘An Empire’ were written as the album took on form. One early direction was to develop the album’s instrumentation purely in terms of texture; refining its sounds without compromising for the sake of convenience of familiarity. As such, ‘An Empire’ sees the band achieve a remarkable depth of orchestration that feels at once comforting and alien.

Whilst providing vocals, guitars, synth textures, piano, vibraphone, harmonium and musical saw parts themselves, Erik and Jakob are joined once again by long-time collaborators Karl Daniel Lidén (drums, mixing/mastering), Anders Carlström (bass) and Minna Larsson Heimo (pipeorgan) whilst also welcoming Vilhelm Weréen on trombone to produce an utterly unique sonic palette that crucially also leaves latent space for Jakob’s voice to shine.

Taken from the album’s third side, lead single ‘The Burning Wall’ embodies this sprawling compositional feat perfectly, with the painfully frank opening couplet of “I know I fail you / I know that I run” establishing a gripping narrative trajectory backed by a simmering, impatient pulse that slowly and inevitably rises to an inescapable crescendo of cymbal chaos and wall-of-sound guitar drone. Elsewhere, 18-minute epic ‘The Pyre’ represents Side B of ‘An Empire’ with the confessional intimacy of a waltz-time ballad; the raw, wavering emotion of Jakob’s words accompanied only by a haunting, lilting piano refrain before it too is consumed by the bittersweet might of post-rock euphoria to leave only embers of the apocalyptic lyrics in its wake...

‘An Empire’ marks a significant evolution of A Swarm of the Sun’s already indelible post-metal sound. In jarring contrast Part Three is visceral and menacing, with bone-shaking basslines on tracks like ‘Dryland’ and ‘Destroy Everything’ interrupted without warning by abrupt, high-gain percussion as Need-Menear’s spellbinding voice and cryptic lyrics float effortlessly above the maelstrom.

Part Four is an awe-inspiring and unsettling amalgamation of what came before as plaintive piano refrains collide with shimmering drum and bass grooves, all interspersed with rich string arrangements and truly apocalyptic synthesiser soundscapes. ‘Vessel’, Part Four’s opening piece, is pulsating synth suspense and eerie effected spoken word as Need-Menear’s already otherworldly vocal delivery is played forwards and backwards, akin to a tape-looped ghost in the machine. ‘Blue Angel’ immediately bursts into life with a fluttering, syncopated breakbeat that channels the likes of Goldie, Massive Attack and Björk as Need-Menear’s presence also gathers momentum before receding back into a deep droning menace that would make i Häxa labelmate and dark ambient pioneer Lustmord proud. ‘Infernum’, a twisting, cyclic callback to Part One’s ‘Inferno’, is as incendiary as its name suggests. The breakbeat from ‘Blue Angel’ returns with a vengeance; this time bitcrushed, compressed and relentless, conjuring the chaos of IDM icons like Squarepusher and Aphex Twin, but paired with a plaintive string motif that adds a distinctive human melancholy to the machine-like madness. Not just the final piece of Part Four but the closing chapter of the entire i Häxa saga, ‘Circle’ is a work of staggering intimacy and emotional candour. The sparse piano, string and vocals arrangements that make up ‘Circle’ are somehow more powerful than the barrage of breakbeats and basslines that precede it and, whilst in this direction the dynamic shift might appear abrupt, ‘Circle’ crucially echoes the latent alt-folk ambience of ‘Underworld’, the very first track of i Häxa’s Part One. As such, ‘Circle’ begins the project’s epic arc again, with Need-Menear’s last words “I see a light, I see an end / And a start, I see it all” serving lyrically and literally as the project’s open and close.

Whilst the album is composed of four distinct movements, each consisting of four distinct tracks themselves; pulling them apart into easily digestible, standalone singles isn’t an easy feat and, as is now clear from the project’s sprawling cyclic nature, was never the intention. In an age of fast fun and instant gratification, the ties that bind these works together are intended to transcend tracklisting. True to its shifting, ephemeral nature, ‘i Häxa’ will be released in two formats: a Double LP in a gatefold sleeve and a deluxe box set housing all four Parts as individual EPs with screen prints on each b-side as well as a bonus LP entitled ‘Fishnets/Oceans’ featuring three vinyl-exclusive tracks as well as a 36-page photobook documenting the making of Part One’s mesmerising short film.

With aural, visual and lyrical themes freely intertwining, i Häxa is something to be consumed whole; just as it will, in time, consume you.
