Nernes was asked: Could you make new music to a five hour long silent movie AND perform it live in just a few months? On paper it seemed like a hopeless project. Way too little time. Way too long of a movie. But \u003cstrong\u003eÅrabrot \u003c\/strong\u003eis one of a kind.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eOn September 3rd 2016, \u003cstrong\u003eÅrabrot Speciale \u003c\/strong\u003estood ready at Verdensteatret in Tromsø; a magnificent building from 1916. Except for front man and composer Nernes, on this day, \u003cstrong\u003eÅrabrot \u003c\/strong\u003econsisted of Karin Park (keyboard), Ane Marthe Sørlien Holen (percussion) and the British musicians Andrew Liles (Nurse With Wound\/Current 93) and A.P Macarte (Arkh\/Gnod).\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eFans of \u003cstrong\u003eÅrabrot \u003c\/strong\u003ethat assumed that this would be five hours of continuous flat pedal and a wall of noise, were surprised. \u003cstrong\u003eÅrabrot\u003c\/strong\u003e’s \u003cem\u003eDie Nibelungen\u003c\/em\u003epiece has both quiet, melodic and atmospheric parts, something that makes the loud and hard parts possibly even more monumental than what we expected from the hands of Kjetil Nernes: for example, the movie ends with a twenty minute fight scene accompanied by a heavy, repeating riff that blew the plaster off of Verdensteatret’s vulnerable stucco.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe concert was luckily recorded and Andrew Liles has produced the excerpts that make up this album. One of the strongest concert experiences I’ve ever witnessed was these hours with Årabrot and \u003cem\u003eDie Nibelungen\u003c\/em\u003e: this album is a documentation of what \u003cstrong\u003eÅrabrot \u003c\/strong\u003eare capable of. And she used her only advantages to do so; her unique voice and personality. By the age 15 she had moved away from home to find her place in music. After studying at Stockholm Music Conservatory, a Norwegian poet took her to Norway where she started her pop career, this was followed by a move to London to write songs, and working as a model.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eAfter five albums, a few Grammys, writing a Eurovision entry for Norway and hits for other artists and performances with Lana Del Rey and David Bowie, Karin returned to the village of her youth and bought the church where she first sang in front of an audience as a child. But eventually the inevitability of normality creeps back into daily life; the lull in live band activity in 2020 provided an opportunity to reset and take stock.. “There were certain things that I had to address concerning myself,” he states, “I’m dealing with human things, anger, frustration, bitterness, regret... not without hope though.” The album’s title references Nietzche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra - a philosophical text centred on self-overcoming, of transcending our own limitations.
