Carrying in that tradition is JUNIUS – a rainy, Brit-inflected supernova of gigantic guitars, entrancing lights, and erudite lyrics, named after the pseudonym of an enigmatic late 18th century political critic.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe New England coast was first illuminated by \u003cstrong\u003eJUNIUS\u003c\/strong\u003e' sonic declarations in 2004. Drawing upon influences as diverse as Failure, Hum, Sunny Day Real Estate, and The Cure, JUNIUS electrified rapt audiences with the spellbinding walls of dreamy guitars and alluring lights that have continued to define the band’s signature aesthetic. Together with fellow Bostonians Seneca a n d Constants, they formed the core of the Radar Recordings collective — a community of self- funded progressive artists founded in 2002.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eShortly after releasing their first EP on Radar, which later became part of the self-titled debut album now re- released as “Vol. 1”, the Post Wave pioneers began a relentless touring regimen of multiple headlining and co- headlining North American tours to fan the flames of an already relatively blazing press. Of the EP, Disclosure Magazine wrote, \"One of the most engaging dark rock albums to come out since Joy Division last graced a stage.\" Junius played over 200 shows in 2005 alone, and spent nearly 9 months on the road that year.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe songs which make up Junius’s self-titled album (Radar \/ S.A.F. Records) were recorded by Will Benoit (of Constants), and mastered by Nick Zampiello (Isis, Converge, Pelican, Cave In). Hailed as a “darkly lush epic” by Alternative Press and “genius” by The Big Takeover, Junius’ work is borne of experiments in isolation and ascetism, including month-long stints in remote places including a storage facility in Texas, a farmhouse in Vermont, a cabin in Pennsylvania, and a small room in the swamps of Louisiana. It’s this austere approach that adds a weighty foundation of authenticity to the members of Junius as credible artists. Themes of forbidden knowledge, supernatural and extra-terrestrial phenomena, and religious mythology permeate singer Joseph E. Spellbinding and heartbreaking, gripping from the first note to the last”, Rolling Stone raved.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe recording process for Martyrdom was just as epic as the music itself. Preparations began in 2006, with month-long writing sessions in such unconventional locales as a bank vault in California, a warehouse in Texas, a farmhouse in Vermont, and a shack in the swamps of Louisiana. These sessions resulted in a concept album inspired by the life and theories of controversial scholar Immanuel Velikovsky. From birth to death, Martyrdom chronicles a man whose progressive theories on ancient history and the cosmos were widely challenged by mainstream academia during his lifetime. Actual quotes from Velikovsky’s interviews and lectures are interspersed between songs, adding to the narrative.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe Martyrdom of a Catastrophist was recorded at the historic Henson Recording Studios in Hollywood, CA, and produced by Junius, Kevin Mills (Tool, Tom Morello, Bruce Springsteen) and Tom Syrowski. Junius would get squeezed in between Justin Timberlake and Tom Jones or booted out of the studio last minute by Mariah Carey, that was the deal to get access to the entire facility. Joseph E. Martinez expands: \"It was a surreal experience to record in such an iconic place and get to record in every room, you’d have Shakira recording next door while Chris Cornell’s singing could be heard from the hallway. We even recorded in the 'We are the World' studio and weird stuff would happen too because the entire place is pretty haunted. If ghosts leave sonic imprints, then they're all over Martyrdom.\" Due to the gorilla style recording process, things were chaotic. Tom Syrowski remembers: “We had no budget, the band moved into our house for a month, and Kevin Mills and I were in way over our heads. That being said, 'The Martyrdom of A Catastrophist' turned out to be something we are very proud of.”\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eWith a recent lineup change, Joel Munguia and Mike Repasch-Nieves have been replaced by Orion Wainer (Constants) and Drew Speziale (Circle takes the Square). Ben Graham (Lessor Glow) has also been added making Junius a 5 piece for the first time.
